Ambassador

His Excellency Mr. Yagya Bahadur Hamal assumed office as the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Nepal to the State of Kuwait on December 17, 2014. He hails from Dang District of Nepal. His academic background includes Economics and English literature. He was one of the top ten students of Nepal (6th position) completing bachelor’s degree in humanities and social sciences (Economics and English) in 1990 with the first division marks under Nepal’s oldest University i.e. Tribhuvan University, Kathmandu. Thereafter, he did Master’s degree in English literature with the first division marks from the same University.

His Excellency Mr. Hamal joined Nepal’s Foreign Service as Section Officer two decades back. As a career diplomat, he has had a varied experience in many areas of work, as he has worked in almost all Sections and Divisions of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and some diplomatic missions of Nepal abroad. As Section Officer and Under Secretary, he has worked in Sections, such as Passport, West Asia and Africa, Administration, Consular, Multilateral Economic Affairs, United Nations, SAARC, BIMSTEC, South East Asia and Pacific, South Asia, etc. He became Joint Secretary of Nepal’s Foreign Service through the competitive examination held by the Public Service Commission. Thereafter, he headed South East Asia and Pacific Division and Regional Organizations Division (SAARC, BIMSTEC, etc.) prior to his assignment as the Ambassador. He led the Nepali delegation to the Preparatory Meeting of the Joint Secretaries/Director Generals of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of BIMSTEC Member States held in Myanmar on March l, 2Ol4 during the 3rd BIMSTEC Summit. He also led the Nepali delegation and chaired the 49th Session of the Progiamming Committee of the Joint Secretaries/Director Generals of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of SAARC Member States held in Kathrnandu on November 22, 2014 during the 18th SAARC Summit hosted by Nepal. He was also a member of the Governing Board of the South Asian University (SAU) based in New Delhi from 2013 to 2014.

He worked as Second Secretary at the Embassy of Nepal in Cairo, Egypt from 1997 to 2001. During that period, he also acted as Chargd d’ Affaires a.i. for about a year. He served at the Embassy of Nepal, Brussels, Belgium as First Secretary during the period 2004-2005. He also worked at the Embassy of Nepal, New Delhi, India from 2008 to 2012 as Counsellor/Minister Counsellor. In course of his service, he has undergone various trainings in the fields of diplomacy and foreign affairs. His Excellency Mr. Hamal has authored a book on Nepal’s Foreign Policy. He is married and has two children, a daughter and a son. His hobbies include reading, writing and travel.
